Exploring the Impact of Incorporating Play into the Artmaking Process of Practicing Artists
Abstract
This research investigates the impact of integrating play into the artmaking process of practicing artists and explores how incorporating a playful mindset influences artistic output. By focusing on the context of artistic creation and the practices of adult artists, this study seeks to enhance understanding of the influence of play on the creative process and outcomes of these individuals. Qualitative case study methodology was employed, involving interviews with five artists practicing in various mediums in the US. Results indicate that play in artmaking led to artists making unexpected discoveries, expressing themselves uniquely, and forming a deeper. connection to the creative process, thereby enhancing their creativity. The findings suggest that integrating play into the artmaking process is essential and beneficial for both children and adults, fostering a sense of freedom, exploration, and creativity.
